Overview
Farming and food systems in Europe and abroad are increasingly recognised as closely linked with environmental, social and ethical issues. The challenges arising in the interface between food production and society in Europe contain many generic traits that also occur in many parts of the world. The multiple cultures, languages and political systems in Europe make this an ideal place for students to experience first hand some of these challenges and potential solutions that could be applied in their home situation.
The study programmes are aimed at international students with a strong interest in sustainable agriculture, agroecosystem management, and sustainable food systems. Students will get the opportunity to understand structure and function of complex agroecosystems. They will learn to apply a systems approach in studying, designing and evaluating agricultural systems and food production chains. The programme teaches a multidisciplinary, experiential learning approach in which natural sciences are combined with social sciences.
Programme Structure
The programme combines a strong research approach in resilient farming at Wageningen University, with the systems approach in agroecology for agroecosystems management at ISARA.
The goal is to develop research competences and project management for the application of agroecological science in real-world situations.
Action learning and action research through cooperation with farmers, food system professionals and consumers will shorten the distance between practice and theory.
