Grounded in the healing potential of making, viewing, and engaging with art, the College of Visual and Performing Arts’ (VPA) art therapy programme at Syracuse University prepares students to employ art-based approaches to counseling when working with diverse populations in a range of clinical and community-based settings.

Features

Our 60-credit master of science (M.S.) in Art Therapy is a hybrid programme that engages students in an integrated approach to learning that includes two on-campus residencies and participation in a dynamic online learning environment.

Experiential learning is employed throughout the curriculum to support students’ engagement with academic material while providing opportunities to use the “tools of the trade” to integrate theory with practice as students prepare for clinical art therapy practice.

Our small cohort size promotes a supportive and collaborative learning experience among students and faculty.

General requirements

Three letters of recommendation.

Unofficial transcript uploaded to the online application. If you are admitted, an official, degree-bearing transcript must be mailed to the University. Applicants must complete a U.S. bachelor’s degree (or its equivalent in another country) before starting a graduate programme.

Personal statement/essay. Describe in approximately 500 words your main academic interests, why you wish to study for the degree you have chosen, why you wish to study at Syracuse University, how you expect to finance your studies, and your plans after you receive your degree.

A non-refundable application fee of $75.

Test scores. The GRE is not required, but scores will be reviewed if submitted.

Portfolio Requirements:

Submit 15-20 items of your artwork via the Syracuse University Applicant Portal. You will receive access to your Syracuse University applicant portal shortly after submitting your application.
