Students of the Conservation Studies (by research) programme delivered by the University of York will focus on an individual project and study advanced taught modules relevant to your research topic.

As an MA researcher in archaeology, you'll have the opportunity to build expertise in a subject area you're passionate about. We offer courses in Archaeology and Conservation Studies. Study the human past or develop creative approaches to the conservation of our heritage.

The focus of your work will be an independent research project. We provide training and support equipping you with skills in a wide range of research methods to enhance your growing expertise. Your research will culminate in a dissertation of up to 30,000 words.

Although there is no required taught component, you can choose to study taught Masters' modules to support your background knowledge or methodological approaches to your research. Your supervisor can advise on the most relevant modules to your degree.

Programme Structure

Research Masters students are required to attend regular tutorials with their principal supervisor in Terms 1 and 2, usually three per term, to ensure that they are well grounded in relevant background knowledge.

They are also able to audit any PGT Core or Research Skills modules in Terms 1 and 2 relevant to their research.

These courses are not formally assessed, but performance will be monitored and, where unsatisfactory, students will be counselled about the consequences.

For research programmes, you must submit your research proposal with your application. This should:

outline the research question you intend to explore and explain its significance
discuss what else has been done in this sphere and how you intend to build on these foundations
indicate the sources of data/evidence that you plan to use and its availability, plus the related methods of analysis

Obviously, some of these matters, especially the last, may not have been decided yet and will develop further anyway during the course of your reserach - this is just to set out a starting point. We recommend that you seek advice from your potential supervisor (i.e. the member of staff who shares your research interests) in constructing this opening proposal.
