Overview

Many students come into the Architecture program at The City University of New York driven by questions they are seeking to address.

Our project-focused format provides a place — a scaffold — to engage these questions within the context of an architectural studio and the discipline of a project. The time we give to these projects promotes a dialogue among professors and classmates, where the ambition is for all of us to learn to ask better questions.

What you'll study

The project covers the conventional areas of architecture — design, history, critical thinking, structure, material assembly, building science — and also allows for the professors’ interests and the students’ interest to comingle.

Projects are substantial and cross-disciplinary because of the time we allocate to them — a rehearsal for the practice of architecture that so many of our students engage in upon graduation. In the 2020-2021 school year, projects include research in anthropology, social equity, climate change, and Walter Benjamin (check them out here).

General requirements

Students entering the M Arch I program are required to have successfully completed one semester of both college-level precalculus (including intervals, inequalities, operations on functions, inverse functions, graphing polynomial and rational functions, binomial theorem, exponential and logarithmic functions, trigonometric functions and formulas) and physics (including vectors and forces) with lab prior to beginning graduate studies, preferably with grades of B or better.
A portfolio of creative work is required for all Spitzer School applicants. The portfolio should reflect your level of creative ability and creative process and can include drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, graphic design, furniture design, garden design, photography, crafts, or other types of work.
