Overview
If you are interested in pursuing a Master’s degree in Environment and Resource Management at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, but do not yet fully meet the entry requirements, you can follow this pre-Master’s programme.
During the pre-Master’s programme, you will be encouraged to step outside of your personal, mono-disciplinary comfort zone and learn about the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats in the three pillars of sustainability (People, Planet, Prosperity).
Degree requirements
- The pre-Master’s programme consists of 30 EC and follows a logical order. First, defining the Grand Challenges of Sustainability (course 1), after which the three pillars of sustainability (Planet, People and Prosperity) are addressed separately, in respectively course 2 (Sustainability and Environmental Change), course 3 (Governance of Global Sustainability) and course 4 (Global Development and Prosperity).
- The pre-Master’s ends with course 5 (Designing Solutions for Sustainability), in which you will complete your Personal Case Study.

Other requirements
General requirements
- Average grade for the bachelor should be at least a 7.0 or equivalent (A bachelor thesis or writing sample can be requested if necessary to confirm quality);
- Affinity with environmental sciences or sustainability, proven by previous study program, courses, thesis or relevant (volunteer) work experience, expressed in a motivation statement or curriculum vitae;
- ERM requirements for English language proficiency, including sufficient scores for each test component;
- Strong motivation statement addressing:
- Interest for environmental and sustainability issues;
- Specific interest for ERM;
- Future ambitions after graduation.
- Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam requires international students and students with a HBO degree to pass an English language proficiency test.
