Overview

The Electrical Engineering - Research Masters program at University of Wisconsin Madison is intended for students who seek training in research and advanced concept development and want to pursue an in-depth project with a faculty member. Students desiring the highest level of research training should apply to the PhD program. Often a Research MS degree is awarded along the way to a PhD degree.

The typical graduate course load is eight to 12 credits per semester, which can include research credits. Degree candidates to should select major professors and begin research work soon after enrolling, preferably by the beginning of their second semester in residence.

A distinguishing feature of the Research MS option is preparation of a thesis or a project report on a research problem. The decision whether to complete a thesis or a project report is made between the research advisor and the student. Typically a project is of more limited scope than a thesis.
