The Counseling program at California State University Sacramento is offered to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to address the needs and concerns of a diverse society.

Our Counseling program at California State University Sacramento is devoted to social justice and advocacy, working within both our classes and communities, to actively oppose discrimination and celebrate diversity. Throughout the program, emphasis is placed on both personal and professional development with experiential learning infused within the curriculum.

  • A key strength of the program is the broad base of experience and training of the faculty members.
  • Our faculty members have unique academic backgrounds, experiences, credentials/licenses, and interests that qualify them to teach and model a wide range of effective approaches to counseling and psychotherapy.

Programme Structure

  • Several courses involve participation, such as service learning in community agencies and schools, prior to the required supervised field placements. Our Counselors-in-Training are required to participate in their own personal counseling, with professionals not affiliated with our educational programs, to aid in their counselor identity development in becoming a reflective practitioner.
  • Graduates leave with a strong foundation in counseling theories and techniques, as well as skills specific to their specialization, to apply in a multicultural society.
