Professional skills are taught in our program from multiple models of treatment and assessment that are evidence-based, and these skills may be used with a variety of individuals.
Students in the Mental Health Counselling program at Iona College, as part of training, may treat children, adolescents and adults. Clients who are served by mental health counselors often have complex mental health issues and exhibit varied levels of need. As part of the clinical training experience in our program, students are required to complete a 600-hour clinical internship at a mental health site or facility. Clinical sites may include outpatient mental health clinics, day treatment programs, residential facilities, inpatient psychiatric hospitals and various locations where mental health services are delivered. Examples of where Iona's Mental Health Counseling students have recently completed their clinical internships are: New York Presbyterian Hospital, Westchester Medical Center, St. Vincent's Hospital and the Mental Health Association of Westchester.
Upon graduation from Iona's Mental Health Counseling program, students become eligible for licensure in New York State (NYS) and other states. NYS requires those in the profession of mental health counseling to obtain post-master's clinical hours and pass the National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Examination (NCMHCE) to achieve full licensure. A fully licensed mental health counselor can work at multiple sites and agencies where mental health services are provided and also pursue a career in private practice if desired.
