What Will I Learn?

Core courses prepare you in general public management theory, techniques and skills. Additionally, there are a number of elective options that you may select based on your professional needs and interests.

Students also apply concepts and skills through internships.

Research opportunities also provide excellent hands-on experience.

What Kinds of Experiences Could I Have?

You may choose to pursue involvement with professional organizations. Central Pennsylvania has an active chapter of the American Society for Public Administration (ASPA), the professional association. ASPA regularly hosts educational and networking events in the Harrisburg area, and MPA students often become chapter members, board members or officers. 

Public Administration students at Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania are leaders in the Public Administration Student Association, the campus professional development organization. Shippensburg University's Pi Alpha Alpha, the public administration academic honor society, is a NASPAA National Chapter of Excellence Award winner.

General requirements

In addition to the application and transcript(s), Public Administration applicants must submit:

  • Rèsumè
  • Three (3) recommendations

Admission is based on prior academic success, and you may be asked to obtain a satisfactory score on the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) or Miller Analogies Test (MAT). Applicants who do not meet minimum requirements may be required to take an introductory course. Students who have full-time managerial employment in a relevant profession may apply for an internship waiver when applying to the MPA program. Students obtaining a waiver for the six credit-hour internship are required to choose a three credit-hour experiential skills course.
