Overview
This Master's introduces you to the analysis of the complex interplay of cultural diversity and power throughout the world with a particular emphasis on multi-level analyses ranging from interpersonal relations and local communities to regional, national and global socio-cultural configurations.
The first year consists of a thorough overview of anthropological theories, issues and debates in conjunction with state-of-the-art training in anthropological research methods. You will learn how to integrate theories and methods, which will result in a finished research design by the end of the year. After completing an intensive training in interview techniques, in the second year you will go on to conduct your empirical research abroad.
Career Prospects
The Master’s Cultural Anthropology - Sociocultural Transformation programme at Utrecht University prepares you for subsequent PhD training, but also serves as a freestanding programme for graduates who aspire to research positions outside academia.

General requirements
The Admissions Committee strives to admit around 20 suitable applicants per year. This Master’s programme has the following entry requirements:
An academic Bachelor's degree in Social or Behavioural Sciences. Your undergraduate degree must have included sufficient anthropology courses (approximately 20 EC) and preferably a course on qualitative research methods. Students with another academic Bachelor's degree with a demonstrable interest in sociocultural transformations can also be admitted to the programme. This is up to the Admissions Committee to decide.
A minimum average grade of 7.5 in the Dutch system or an international equivalent
English writing sample: applicants are required to submit an English academic writing sample in the form of a term paper, thesis or published article, preferably on a topic related to the programme.
