Does globalisation threaten social solidarity? How do we encourage corporate social responsibility? How must we understand populist movements? How can we rise to the challenge of climate change? The Philosophy, Politics and Economics programme offered by University of Groningen will help you find the answers.

These complex challenges face our world today. They cannot be solved or analysed from one discipline alone. We need an interdisciplinary approach that cuts across boundaries. This is what the selective 1-year Master's programme in Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) at University of Groningen offers. The programme aims at ambitious students with a wide range of interests – students who want to explore the philosophical dimensions of political and economic issues and develop and apply their critical thinking tools. If you are interested to work at the interface between politics, economics and philosophy, the  Philosophy, Politics and Economics from University of Groningen is your master's programme.

The Philosophy, Politics and Economics programme is offered by University of Groningen. What will you learn? The programme will equip you with the central theoretical and methodological tools from PPE that allow you to understand and critically examine complex problems ranging from global poverty to the financial crisis. You will learn to review the political and economic complexities of organizational structures. You will see what is at stake in theories of democracy, political power, collective decision-making, social deliberation and economic growth. And you will learn how to apply theories and methods to concrete problems both locally and globally.

Job prospects

PPE is an academic Master's degree programme that prepares you for work in public service, banking and finance, commerce, journalism, politics and public policy making. In all of these domains, you will use your skills to address societal problems and policy questions.

Our PPE programme provides you with the knowledge, insight, and skills that will prepare you for careers in organizations as diverse as national or international public administrations, governmental and non-governmental organizations, private businesses and banks, think tanks and research institutions.

Programme Structure

The one-year (60 ECTS) programme consists of nine modules of 5 ECTS each and a 15 ECTS Master thesis. Three of these nine modules constitute the academic core of the programme: History of PPE, Methods of PPE, and Theories of PPE. The two PPE seminars run parallel to the Methods and Theories core courses. Four PPE electives and a Master thesis complete the programme.
