The Institute for Data Processing and Electronics (IPE) is characterised by its technological diversity and its broad range of projects. IPE contributes to numerous large-scale research programs at the National Laboratory KIT, such as Astroparticle Physics, Synchrotron Radiation Source ANKA, NANOMIKRO, Supercomputing and Atmosphere and Climate.
The core competences of the institute are
- packaging of integrated circuits (group AVT)
- the development of embedded systems consisting of hardware and firmware for fast parallel data acquisition and processing (group EPS)
- the development of measurement, control and evaluation systems for diverse applications in the field of sensor technology, analytics and data acquisition for experiments (group MSA)
- the design and implementation of control and data acquisition systems for complex scientific experiments (group PDV)
- the establishment of service-oriented architectures for data processing in grid infrastructures for scientific projects (group SWM)
The IPE has the infrastructure to fully assemble complex electronic systems:
- a centre of 400 m2 for packaging of integrated circuits for hybrid and SMD technology
- an electronic and a mechanical workshop
- an ultrasound laboratory
- an EMV laboratory
- a microwave laboratory
- printed circuit board design
- access to various grid clusters
IPE collaborates with several research groups within KIT and external research facilities. A close cooperation is carried out with Campus South, in particular with the Faculty of Physics and Electrical Engineering and Information Technology.
IPE consists of approximately 60 employees and 20 students. Theses are carried out in the fields of physics, electrical engineering, computer science and medical technology.
