History
The origins of the Faculty of Fine Art, Music and Design go back to three privately run institutions that were later taken over by the state.
- 1905: The Bergen Music Academy (Bergens Musikkakademi) is founded and later becomes the Bergen Conservatory of Music (Bergen musikkonservatorium). State-funded since 1981.
Education
Academic activities are organised across three departments with a joint administration:
- The Art Academy,
- the Grieg Academy – Department of Music, and
- Department of Design.
Research
Each department has research fellows affiliated with both the Artistic Research Programme and other PhD programmes at the University of Bergen (UiB). UiB is also working to establish a new arts-based PhD programme to further reinforce the faculty’s breadth and scope.

Student services
Talk with someone outside the University of Bergen?
- The students’ representative is an independent support person who has the task of giving students at the University of Bergen advice and assistance in matters related to the study situation.
- The advisers in the Sammen Student Welfare Organization are neutral and secure conversation partners.
Housing services
New international students on the following categories are guaranteed student housing at SAMMEN, provided availability:
- Exchange students.
- International master's degree students.
- Students in other collaboration programs with a minimum stay of one semester.
- Students are only guaranteed housing once.
- It is not possible to terminate the housing contract and then have guaranteed housing again.
Library services
The Department for Special Collections forms part of the University Library of Bergen, itself a continuation of the old Bergen`s Museum`s Library, founded in 1825. The Special Collections incorporates gifts, donations and acquisitions of images, especially photographs, manuscripts, diplomas, maps, antiquarian books and newspapers.
Campus life
A new building is under construction where the whole KHiB campus is going to be located under one roof. The world-renowned Norwegian Architect office Snøhetta have designed the building. The new building is due to be completed and taken in use in 2017.
Student clubs
Bergen is filled with different events for students, and student organisations host a lot of them. Here you will find the student organisations that are open for international students or where spoken language is English. Most student organisations will welcome international students. Contact the one you are interested in and ask if you can join.
