The origins of the Faculty of Fine Art, Music and Design go back to three privately run institutions that were later taken over by the state.
The Faculty of Fine Art, Music and Design (KMD) offers BA, MA and PhD programmes based on an internationally recognised level of artistic research.
The academic staff at the departments of Fine Art and Design share the same facilities in a new building especially designed by the Norwegian architecture firm Snøhetta. Currently, the university is in the planning phase to establish a separate building for The Grieg Academy – Department of Music on a neighbouring site at Møllendal. KMD cooperates with many leading institutions on the local, national and international level.
Each department has research fellows affiliated with both the Artistic Research Programme and other PhD programmes at the University of Bergen (UiB). UiB is also working to establish a new arts-based PhD programme to further reinforce the faculty’s breadth and scope.
The Academy has a library on campus located in Vaskerelven 8. It offers books and periodicals on the subjects of art and design. Although primarily for students and staff, the library also welcomes the public.
A new building is under construction where the whole KHiB campus is going to be located under one roof. The world-renowned Norwegian Architect office Snøhetta have designed the building. The new building is due to be completed and taken in use in 2017.
