History
Architecture has been taught at UCL for over 175 years. In 1841, UCL became the first British university to appoint a chair of architecture, Thomas Leverton Donaldson, a founding member of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). The faculty was named after its benefactor, Sir Herbert Bartlett.
The school moved to the 22 Gordon Street building at UCL’s London Bloomsbury campus in 1974.
Education
The Bartlett School of Architecture delivers a wide range of postgraduate programmes, including the professionally accredited Architecture MArch (Part 2) and other specialised masters such as Architectural Design, Architectural Computation, Urban Design, and Landscape Architecture.
Courses combine advanced design studios, technical and theoretical learning, and creative experimentation. Students are encouraged to develop design skills, critical thinking, and practical expertise needed for a variety of architectural and built environment careers.
Research
Research at Bartlett Architecture pushes the boundaries of design, technology, sustainability, and urban theory. It integrates creative practice with analytical inquiry, exploring topics such as computational design, environmental systems, and spatial innovation.
The school’s research contributes to global architectural discourse and collaborates across disciplines within UCL Bartlett Faculty of the Built Environment, addressing complex challenges in cities, society, and the environment.
Career
Graduates from Bartlett Architecture are equipped with advanced creative, technical, and analytical skills that open doors across architecture, design, urban planning, and related fields. School alumni work internationally in architectural practices, research, digital fabrication, creative industries, and academia.
A high proportion of graduates find work or further study soon after completing their degrees, with careers that span construction, built environment organisations, technology, and creative sectors.
