Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Katowice

Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Katowice

We are artists, designers and researchers. The Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice is a meeting place, a field for exchanging ideas around active participation in culture, critical perception and social change. We create a diverse community of people who do not want to be neutral. Neutral is not natural.

Top reasons to study here

  • You will study at the Faculty with the A+ category, which is the highest possible distinction awarded by the state-run Polish Accreditation Committee.
  • Your individuality counts here: you will study in small groups, supervised and tutored by experienced teachers with internationally-recognized achievements.
  • You will have access to state-of-the-art equipment, methods and technologies; you will study on a modern campus with a film studio, modelling workshops and lab.

The Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice has been an independent state institution of higher education since 2001.

The school was founded as a branch of a Wrocław institution in 1947, and later functioned as part of Poland’s oldest art university in Kraków.

Most importantly, during the school’s growth we have successfully preserved its intimate atmosphere, developed a student-focused style of education, and defined art and design as the major areas of research.

The Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice has two faculties: the Faculty of Design comprising the Department of Graphic Design and Department of Design, and the Faculty of Art comprising the Department of Painting and Department of Graphic Art.The qualities we value and emphasise in our teaching:

  • independence and individual development;
  • shaping the awareness among designers of new challenges posed by civilization;
  • fostering a sense of social and professional responsibility in designers;
  • openness and the ability to debate one’s point while respecting other approaches;
  • interdisciplinarity: being able to work across disciplines and to be part of a team;
  • the focus on current research methods, design tools and methods of implementation.

  • Research-driven Design
  • The Academy’s unique quality is its research-driven approach to design. One day per week is reserved for learning about and testing contemporary research methods useful in graphic design, from those with distinctly laid out procedures, those employing participative design, those researching user needs, to those including project interventions/happenings/installations and speculative design.
  • Learning about the contexts, broadening perspectives and open discussions about contemporary challenges are as important as knowing the designer’s toolkit and methods. The latter are competently presented in particular courses within the study programme, the former are made possible by curated seminars centred about the three thematic areas mentioned above (out of the box, commercial and social).

Graphic Design graduates: The variety of possibilities includes editorial and typographic projects (including font design), designing visual identification, exhibitions, data visualisation, digital publications, UX and UI interfaces and the new media (animation, film, installation, VR). Some of our graduates specialise in multimedia projects (animation, video clips, video spots, video credits, post-production, film editing) and in creating artistic illustrations.

  • Design graduates:
The programme prepares its graduates to work as designers of products, services, interactions, public spaces, and design consultants. It also prepares graduates to work in R&D teams concerned with developing new products and services, visual information systems and interfaces, services, exhibition and environmental design.

Student Life

Campus life

  • The ASP campus is a visible sign of our integration.
  • The oldest of the 3 buildings — an icon of modernist architecture — is currently the seat of the University authorities, administration and the Faculty of Design. The Graphic Arts and Graphic Design departments are housed in an adapted military barracks building and are connected by a modern building situated between them, designed as a place of education and space for cultural activities. Here you will find the Department of Painting, and studios available to all students: painting, drawing, sculpting, film studio, lecture and computer workshops, laboratories for motion pictures production, modeling and a room for spatial activities, which is also an exhibition space for large-format works, library, auditorium and cinema room, restaurant, and a shop with art supplies.
  • The Academy’s Rondo Sztuki Gallery is located in the centre of Katowice.

The Faculty of Design has the A+ category, which is the highest possible distinction and a mark of excellence awarded by the state-run Polish Accreditation Committee.
