About

History

Located in Houghton (Allegany County), this private, Christian, liberal arts college began in 1883 as a seminary (high school) under the Wesleyan Methodist Connection. Coeducational from its founding, Houghton operated as a secondary school for its first 15 years.

In 1899 a few college classes were offered; the college department's first diploma was awarded in 1901.

Library services

GRACE (Gathering Resources and Citations Electronically), is the Willard J. Houghton Library's catalog. You can access library resources via GRACE (Library Catalog) or WorldCat. (For WorldCat, remember to check the box "Items in my library")

Campus life

Houghton College is a distinctively residential community. Most students, faculty, and staff live, learn, work, and worship within close proximity to the hamlet of Houghton.

Sports facilities

As a Houghton Highlander, you can let your competitive side out to play one of our 18 NCAA D-III sports.Or perhaps intramural or club sports are more your style. And naturally, all of our teams need fans - the louder, the better.

In terms of recreation, you name it and you can find it here: hiking, camping, skiing, swimming, canoeing, and even a ropes course in the Houghton Forest. We're also about 15 minutes away from Letchworth State Park, with gorgeous waterfalls and hiking trails.

Allegany County Outreach

Allegany County Outreach connects with the children and youth of Allegany County. They provide meaningful engagement opportunities and find ways to help youth have fun in the community.

Black Heritage Club

Black Heritage Club enriches the campus through providing events to celebrate the diversity of culture represented on campus. While it primarily serves black students on campus, it is open to anyone.
