History
The earliest roots of the American Baptist Seminary of the West lie in the chartering of California College, Vacaville, in 1871. In 1915 BBDS merged with the Pacific Coast Baptist Theological Seminary, which had begun in Oakland in 1890 and had moved to Berkeley in 1904.
Education
ABSW offers accredited Master of Divinity (MDiv), Master of Community Leadership (MCL), and Doctor of Ministry (DMin) degrees. Jointly with the Graduate Theological Union, ABSW offers an accredited Master of Arts (MA). ABSW also participates with the Graduate Theological Union in offering the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Doctor of Theology (ThD) degrees.

Housing services
On-campus housing offers a unique opportunity for community development beyond the classroom. ABSW currently owns two apartment buildings (Gray and Bratcher) located on the seminary campus. Apartments include one-bedroom, two-bedroom and studio.
Library services
The Flora Lamson Hewlett Library is home to more that 450,000 volumes, 1200 perodical subscriptions, and 292,000 microforms and audio visual materials. It is considered one of the largest theological libraries in the United States. The library building includes a central reading room, study areas, computer lab, and a helpful library staff.
Campus life
ABSW currently owns two apartment buildings (Gray and Bratcher) located on the seminary campus. Apartments include one-bedroom, two-bedroom and studio. All are unfurnished. The apartments were renovated and retrofitted for earthquake safety in 2003 and 2005. Washers and dryers are available in a community laundry room located under Bratcher Apartment building. Residents pay for utilities, telephone, internet, and cable. Parking spaces may be available to residents for a monthly fee.
