History
As the Revolutionary War came to a close, Washington College was just getting started. Its founder, William Smith, had a revolutionary idea: to educate responsible citizen-leaders who could make the new democracy work.
We think this idea is still incredibly important.
Education
Washington hoped that young people of the new nation would be equipped not just with facts and figures, but with creativity and the moral courage to safeguard our inheritance and help us form a more perfect union.Establishing a liberal arts college with this distinctly secular mission was a revolutionary idea at the time. But the idea still resonates on this campus, where students are conducting groundbreaking scientific research, discussing the proper role of government power, exploring great books and works of art.
Research
The Chester River Field Research Station was established in 1999 with the initiation of an academic study to restore a native grassland landscape habitat on 228 acres of what had previously been row crop farmland, and an avian migration banding station on Chino Farms, Queen Anne’s County, Maryland.Recently merged with the Center for Environment & Society at Washington College, CRFRS continues its research while providing educational opportunities for both the public and up-and-coming biologists.
