History
History is more than the study of the past. It is an encounter with the cultural possibilities that human beings have confronted over time. The History Department at Whitman encourages that encounter through a rigorous, multidimensional curriculum that exposes all students to global and comparative perspectives on different regions, eras and methodologies.

Housing services
Students are housed in a residence hall on the Whitman campus which is within a short walk of all studios. The beautiful park-like campus is complete with duck ponds, a meandering stream, and footbridges. Experienced 24 hour adult supervision is provided along with 24 hour campus security.
Library services
Penrose Library is open 24/7, and at least one student has called it “the most beautiful thing in the world.” The library is comfortable, functional, centrally located on campus and provides a great view of Ankeny Field. It offers plenty of study rooms and cozy, light-filled nooks for Whitties to curl up with their laptops, books and research materials for a long night of study.
Medical services
The College recognizes health maintenance and promotion as essential to both learning and efficiency. Good health in all respects is a determining factor in the academic success of students attending college. In support of these goals, the Welty Center Student Health Services, located at 11 Merriam Street, offers students convenient primary health care.
