History
The institution was founded in 1937 in Pomfret, Connecticut, by Archbishop (later Ecumenical Patriarch) Athenagoras and Bishop (later Archbishop) Athenagoras Cavadas, who served as the first Dean.

Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology is exactly that: a graduate school of theology that educates and forms Orthodox Christian men and women for service to the Church and society. The curriculum integrates sustainable development principles across disciplines, from engineering and business to pharmacy and agriculture, fostering a multidisciplinary perspective on addressing real-world issues. The campus itself reflects the university’s commitment, with green spaces and sustainable architecture that create a practical learning environment. Students are encouraged to engage in community projects, which provides hands-on experience in creating positive social impact and addressing environmental challenges. Faculty members are supportive and knowledgeable, often bringing both academic and field expertise to their teaching. However, like many institutions focusing on innovative education, Heliopolis University faces challenges, such as securing resources for large-scale projects and ensuring that all programs stay current with industry standards. Student services
Hellenic College Holy Cross offers a Christ-centered community life that enhances the intellectual, moral, and spiritual lives of students, who will become the next generation of leaders for the Church and the world at large. Here, students do not learn Orthodox Christian theology only in the classroom.
They also put theology into practice in the Chapel, campus housing, the cafeteria, the athletic field, and as volunteers in the community. HCHC provides the experience of living in an Orthodox Christian community, which helps to develop service-oriented leaders for our Church and our society.
Housing services
HCHC's residential program complements the educational mission of the school. Students who live in campus housing have certain freedoms and responsibilities.
Regulations exist which are consistent with the educational purpose of the residential area. The residential environment requires those sharing a living unit to be both cooperative and considerate.
Library services
The Archbishop Iakovos Library and Learning Resource Center serves Hellenic College Holy Cross and the greater academic and religious community by supporting the curricula of the undergraduate college and the master’s level theological and seminary programs and by offering research materials for scholarly work.
ICT services
Hellenic College Holy Cross has two computer labs, located in Rooms 111 and 111a of the Skouras Classroom Building. The computer labs are a place for students to study and work on projects and also serve as smart classrooms for various courses and workshops.The computer labs are equipped with 19 workstations, each running Microsoft Windows XP.
Campus life
Students at Hellenic College Holy Cross do not learn Orthodox Christian theology only in the classroom. Sports facilities
Intramural and pick-up sports and the state-of-the-art Leadership 100 Fitness Center provide students with opportunities for competition and physical exercise.
The Athletics Committee coordinates events on campus to support fellowship, active lifestyles, and friendly, Christian competition. The athletic program currently hosts four major intramural sports throughout the year (flag football, basketball, soccer, and volleyball), in addition to the very popular annual Hellenic College vs. Holy Cross football, dodgeball, and/or basketball games.
Student clubs
HCHC students come from a variety of traditions and backgrounds. They are at many different stages of life and have different goals and aspirations, but they all come together to form one community of faith and learning. Students are encouraged to actively participate in campus organizations to further develop themselves as service-oriented leaders. New organizations are formed at the beginning of each academic year based upon student interests.
