We create possibilities for our students by offering a full range of studies in the arts, sciences, humanities, mathematics and social sciences. Our approach to the liberal arts emphasizes active learning in the classroom, on the campus and in the real world.

History

Wheaton was founded in 1834 as a female seminary and chartered as a four-year liberal arts college in 1912. The college became coeducational in 1988, and its Phi Beta Kappa chapter was established in 1932. On July 15, 2014, Dennis M. Hanno became Wheaton’s eighth president.

Education

The open spirit of inquiry is reflected in our curriculum, which emphasizes connections among traditional academic disciplines. With more than 600 courses, 47 majors and 59 minors you will find plenty of opportunities to discover how the arts and sciences, humanities and social sciences complement each other. At Wheaton, artists dig into chemistry, biologists delve into literature, historians incorporate the findings of social psychology to better understand the past.

Research

Wheaton's faculty are constantly engaged in original research, and for years Wheaton students of many disciplines have contributed to this work. The Office of Institutional Research & Assessment (OIRA) supports the realization of Wheaton College’s strategic vision through the collection, analysis, and dissemination of information in support of assessment, enrollment management, planning and decision-making.

Wheaton College Student Review

I am currently a junior at Wheaton and the past three years at this college have been incredibly formative and memorable. As an international student from the UK, it has been particularly exciting to both study and live abroad close to Chicago and to participate in their education system and curriculum. Wheaton's professors are incredibly intelligent and have attended some of the world's best universities. They are deeply invested in their students and challenge them with rigorous work and insightful classroom discussion. The small classroom sizes allows for open conversation with professors, discussion with peers, and a strong learning environment. Professors have high standards but are very open to assisting students with whatever they need. Wheaton also boasts many extracurricular opportunities where students can join various teams and be shaped as leaders. There are a great many clubs and societies to join or lead and they are fundamental to the college experience. Both education and extracurriculars are centred around faith, which is something Wheaton is remarkably committed to. Professors are dedicated to praying for their students and students are very keen to invest in the spiritual community. Chapel occurs every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and professors often open their classes / lectures with prayer or a Bible reading. Our work is centred around our faith and often includes Biblical references or links. Housing allows for the creation of strong relationships and warm community. Wheaton has truly shaped me as a person and is somewhere that really feels like home to me. I would recommend it to any high achieving student who wishes to gain a Christ-centered education with many opportunities.

Real community

Wheaton is a place where you can find true community to support you through your college experience. The professors are eager to assist students with struggles in and out of the classroom. Campus wide events add to the family-feel that you will find at Wheaton. The rigorous academics push everyone to improve in many areas and grow alongside one another.

Student services

  • Office of Student Financial Services
  • Office of Residential Life

Housing services

Most students live on campus. Off campus housing can also be arranged. Smoke-free residence halls bring together students from different class years. Typically, first-year students, sophomores and juniors share doubles, triples or quads; seniors choose between single rooms and doubles. There are themed houses for students who share common interests and want to develop programming that serves the campus and local community.

Library services

Madeleine Clark Wallace Library provides a myriad of services, technologies, and spaces central to and in support of the educational mission of Wheaton College.  We are also the largest student employer on campus.

ICT services

Wheaton has arrangements with a variety of vendors that may get you discounts on technology:

  • Apple (for Mac software and hardware)
  • Dell (for PC hardware, software, and accessories)
  • Gov Connection (for miscellaneous parts and peripherals, e.g. external hard drives, memory sticks, etc.)
  • SHI (for Adobe products)

Medical services

There is no “universal” healthcare in the United States, also referred to as “national” healthcare.  Americans purchase their own insurance with a private insurance company either on their own or through an employer.  As an international student, you will need to do the same.  Either on your own or through your institution.

Campus life

The college both benefits from and contributes to the quality of life in Norton and the surrounding communities of southeastern Massachusetts and the greater Boston region.

Sports facilities

Our extensive recreational facilities include the Haas Athletic Center, the Clark Center and the recently renovated fitness center in the Balfour-Hood Center. You can take advantage of basketball and tennis courts, Selectorized/Nautilus circuit, plated-loaded machines, a 200-meter track and a 25-yard or 25-meter swimming pool. Outdoor facilities include a running and walking path, lighted tennis and basketball courts and playing fields. Throughout the year, we also sponsor a variety of fitness classes and activities—from kickboxing to pilates.

Student clubs

So you think you can dance, sing, debate, save the world? At Wheaton College you can find ways to do it all. (Saving the world might be a bit challenging, but there are plenty of opportunities to try). Take your pick from more than 100 student-run clubs and organizations or start your own.

Accreditation

Wheaton College is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC), which renewed the college's accreditation on July 1, 2010.
