Over time, Holy Cross has continuously evolved to reflect the needs of our students and changing times. Our Jesuit, Catholic identity has remained a constant throughout that evolution — informing and influencing everything we do.

History

From the beginning of his tenure as the second Bishop of Boston, Benedict Joseph Fenwick of the Society of Jesus longed to establish a Catholic College within the boundaries of his all-New England diocese. Catholics in great numbers, fleeing religious persecution and famine, and seeking economic opportunity, were pouring into the region.

Education

Since 1843, Holy Cross has sought to educate students who, as leaders in business, professional, and civic life, would live by the highest intellectual and ethical standards. In service of this ideal, Holy Cross endeavors to create an environment in which integrated learning is a shared responsibility, pursued in classroom and laboratory, studio and theater, residence and chapel.

Research

From compiling oral histories through local or global fieldwork, to investigating the antiviral properties of proteins, to digitizing ancient manuscripts, our students pursue research that connects coursework with hands-on experiences in the laboratory and in the field.

Career

With a liberal arts education, you can pursue practically any career under the sun. The tough part is figuring out what you want to try first after you graduate. That’s where career planning comes in. We can help you discover how to translate what you love into something you’ll love to do.

Student services

The Division of Student Affairs, in the context of a residential environment, assists students in their growth and development in every facet of life: intellectual, psychological, social, spiritual, cultural, physical, and vocational. Working with a dedicated staff, students engage in programs, exercise leadership in service to others and participate and promote a diverse campus community.

Housing services

As a residential college in which more than 90 percent of students live on campus, Holy Cross promotes a multidimensional learning experience that transcends classroom studies. On-campus housing is guaranteed for four years; all first-year students live on campus and participate in our unique Montserrat living/learning program. Each of our 11 coed residence halls features comfortable, fully networked spaces for living, learning, and socializing.

Library services

Our libraries support Holy Cross’ rigorous curriculum and promote academic excellence. The warm and friendly environment in each of our libraries encourages study, reflection, and intellectual growth.

ICT services

Information Technology Services provides technology infrastructure and assistance to enable the College community to enhance teaching and learning, support the College's administrative operations, and further the mission of the College through the use of technology.

Medical services

Health Services provides quality health care that recognizes the individual needs of the students and supports their academic success. Healthcare professionals provide services, programs and wellness education to enable students to become well integrated in mind, body and spirit.

Campus life

During the one-hour tour of campus, our welcoming tour guides cover a lot of ground — physically and intellectually — traversing The Hill and touching on topics ranging from declaring a major to their favorite meals served in Kimball. But the greatest advantage to having a student guide is the chance to get the inside scoop from someone who’s living the Holy Cross experience.

Sports facilities

Are you interested in continuing your favorite high school sport, but don’t have the time commitment to play at the Varsity level? Perhaps there is a sport or recreational activity you have never participated in  before, but have always wanted to explore. Are you new to the College and want to find a way to meet fellow students who share a common interest with you? Whatever your circumstance may be, the Club Sport program at Holy Cross offers students an opportunity for all students to enjoy the benefits of a group experience.

Student clubs

Whether you’re looking to lead, write, reflect, sing, or advocate for others, you’ve come to the right place. With a spectrum of more than 100 clubs and organizations, there are unlimited ways to develop personally and professionally — while also having the time of your life.

Accreditation

Accreditation of U.S. colleges and universities is a both a process and a status. It is the process of reviewing educational institutions to judge their quality — how well they serve students and society. The result of the rigorous process, if successful, is the award of “accredited status.” Holy Cross is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC), and its accreditation is reviewed every 10 years. Holy Cross’ accreditation was last renewed in the fall of 2010.
