Established 100 years ago, Åbo Akademi University operates currently in Turku and Vaasa. Our leading principles include diversity, openness, courage, sustainability and participation. In our capacity as the only Swedish-speaking university in Finland, we offer a wide range of educational options. We also conduct research in many fields.


All undergraduate (bachelor level) programmes at Åbo Akademi University are taught in Swedish. Please note that all programmes on the bachelor level at Åbo Akademi University require good knowledge of Swedish langauge prior to admission.

We currently offer 9 different international master programmes in a number of different fields. Our university is known for good teacher-student relations, small groups and good possibilities to get individual support within the studies.


Part of the research at Åbo Akademi University is conducted at independent research institutes or centres. Our research mobility programme supports research visits to and from Åbo Akademi University.


Our mission is to improve students and graduates prospects on the labor market by increasing the interaction between university studies and working life. We offer students:

Student services

Within the central education services (the Student office) we handle among other things student services, international student affairs, and the study register. The Career services and the student psychologist are also part of the Education services.

Housing services

Housing for exchange students is offered in single or shared apartments. All rooms are single rooms. Most exchange students live in shared apartments since there are not enough single apartments. All apartments have bathrooms and access to kitchen facilities.

The city of Turku rents apartments for exchange students in Luolavuori. Of these apartments 28 are reserved for Åbo Akademi University’s exchange students. The rooms are single rooms with their own WC but with shared showers and kitchen. All the apartments are furnished and the rent is 285 €/month (including water, electricity and Internet). The rental period is for the whole term.

Library services

Åbo Akademi University Library is an academic library that primarily serves students and faculty at Åbo Akademi University and Novia University of Applied Sciences.

Åbo Akademi University Library opened in 1919. Since its start, the library has had a status as a legal depository library, making the domestic publications collection almost complete.

ICT services

ICT Services (ICT) is responsible for the IT-infrastructure at the University, including user´s accounts, e-mail, work stations, server computers and user support. Some of our software agreements cover the home user´s computer as well.

Medical services

The Student Health Care Services are available in many cities in Finland. As a Student Union member you have access to the health services at all the different health care centres. The Student Health Care Services offers:

Student Life

Campus life

The university is spread across two main campuses: one in the city of Åbo (‘Turku’ in Finnish) and the other in the city of Vasa (‘Vaasa’ in Finnish). Which campus you study at will depend on your chosen programme, but both campuses are recognised equally on an international level for their contributions to research, as well as their overall excellence in the world of academia.

Sports facilities

There are sports activities offered both in Åbo CampusSport ( and in Vasa.

Student clubs

Student assocications ( are organised under the Student Union ( and represent a broad variety of interests from regional to subject related associations as well as from cultural, religious, ideological to music and sports associations.
