Åbo Akademi University is a multidisciplinary and international university located in South-Western Finland with programmes at bachelor, master and doctoral level. The main language of instruction is Swedish but we also have interesting Master’s Degree Programmes in English. We offer an inspiring environment for completing a master’s degree and good opportunities to continue with doctoral studies.

Åbo Akademi University offers study opportunities on undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate level in a vast number of subjects. We also offer a number of International Master's Programmes taught in English.

Student services

There are many units and persons at Åbo Akademi University to help you with matters concerning your studies. Here is a short introduction to different units which students can turn to for help in various situations.

Housing services

As a student you have the possibility to rent student apartments and -rooms at a reasonable price. In Turku these are offered by Turku Student Village Foundation (TYS) and the Student Union, and in Vaasa by the Student Housing Foundation (VOAS).

You can also look for an apartment on the private market. It should not be too hard to find a suitable place to live neither in Turku nor in Vaasa. Both towns are relatively small so the distances are not a problem - you can easily move from one place to another.

Library services

Åbo Akademi University Library, opened in 1919, is a modern university library with printed and electronic collections. It is one of the legal depository libraries in Finland. It is a public library and consists of service units

The library has over two million printed books and journals, and provides access to ca. 23 000 licensed e-journals and more than 410 000 e-books.

ICT services

ICT Services (ICT) is responsible for the IT-infrastructure at the University, including user´s accounts, e-mail, work stations, server computers and user support. Some of our software agreements cover the home user´s computer as well.

Medical services

The Student Health Care Services are available in many cities in Finland. As a Student Union member you have access to the health services at all the different health care centres. The Student Health Care Services offers:

Student Life

Campus life

Åbo Akademi University has two main campuses: One in Åbo/Turku and one in Vaasa.

  • Åbo campus hosts the majority of the university's students and researchers. Åbo (Turku in Finnish) is Finland's oldest university town with traditions dating back to 1640. Åbo is a city of history, art and culture. There are many museums, theatres, dance companies, a philharmonic orchestra etc. The Turku Castle and the Turku Cathedral are both landmarks in Finnish history. The famous archipelago is just outside the city.
  • Vasa campus is located in the city of Vaasa, situated on the west coast of Finland with direct connections to Helsingfors (Helsinki) and Stockholm (in Sweden).

Sports facilities

CampusSport offers a variaty of sports events, courses and classes for all students in Turku.

Student clubs

The Student Union works as an interest group and service organization for students regarding matters such as studies, housing, health care, examination, sports etc.

I am an MA student doing a Clinical Education degree at UCL. This is my second year. I learnt so much and it helps me professionally as well as personally.

Too few of my courses are useful for me. They are too theoretical and dry. Instead of developing our skills, our teachers talk about their proper research topics. As a student, I cannot influence the content of the courses. I cannot study on my own (for example, MOOCs or textbooks) and get credits.

My study program is combined between both Turku University (UTU) and Abo Akademi (AA), so I was able to get a taste of both universities.
