Denison University is a private, coeducational, and residential four-year liberal arts college in Granville, Ohio, about 30 mi (48 km) east of Columbus. Founded in 1831, it is Ohio's second-oldest liberal arts college. Denison is a member of the Five Colleges of Ohio and the Great Lakes Colleges Association, and competes in the North Coast Athletic Conference.

History

On December 13, 1831, John Pratt, the college's first president and a graduate of Brown University, inaugurated classes at the Granville Literary and Theological Institution. Situated on a 200-acre farm south of the village of Granville; it was the second Baptist college west of the Allegheny mountains after Georgetown College, which was founded in 1829.

Education

Our curriculum balances breadth with depth, building academic specialization upon a liberal arts foundation in the arts, the sciences, the social sciences and the humanities. Responsive to new ways of learning, we continue to develop interdisciplinary integration of the many forms of knowledge. While our students pursue specialized learning in their chosen majors, they also develop the framework for an integrated intellectual life, spiritually and morally informed.

Research

Research is a fundamental element of the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry. Our faculty members are active scholars in a wide variety of chemical and biochemical disciplines, regularly presenting their work at professional conferences and publishing their findings in peer-reviewed scientific journals. The department is deeply committed to sustaining a vigorous and diverse range of collaborative student-faculty research, and the majority of our majors engage in a meaningful research experience prior to graduation.

Career

Denison is among the first colleges in the nation to formally support students after graduation as they make the transition into the professional world. Not only are online resources available, but students and alumni also can access Denison Connecting, an established and popular program that brings together Denison alumni in cities across the country and the globe for evening networking receptions.

Denison close community

I loved my time at Denison! The faculty are phenomenal. I also loved the beautiful campus and small, tight-knit community. Being a liberal arts school, you have a lot of flexibility in what you can study. I really enjoyed being able to take electives in areas of study that I was curious about, but wasn't majoring in.

Housing services

Relive your student experience by staying in campus housing (dormitories) during your Reunion. Check-in begins at noon on Friday for all Reunion classes. Check-out is no later than noon on Sunday. A key deposit is required and will be refunded when you return your keys.

Library services

As the place where the disciplines meet, Denison Libraries help people ask the right questions as they discover and build knowledge.

We are committed to connecting people with ideas, and to creating an intellectual and cultural commons where individuals can experience the power of sharing information.

ICT services

Denison University provides online resources to students, faculty and staff for many purposes ranging from education and research to communications and entertainment. The costs associated with operating a large volume network are part of the general operating expenses.

Medical services

Health Services provides primary health care to the currently enrolled Denison student community. Medical records provided by all entering students allow Denison Health Services to serve as the student’s health care provider when on campus.

Campus life

The campus size is about 1,100 acres (4 km²). This includes a 400-acre (1.4 km²) biological reserve just east of campus, where professors of sciences like geology and biology can hold class. Purchased in 2014 is the Denison Golf Course, an 18-hole course just 0.4 miles from the academic campus, and the Granville Inn and Bar, now owned by the university.

Sports facilities

Denison is a member of the NCAA Division III and the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) since the conference’s formation in 1984. As a part of the 10-member conference Denison boasts a league-record 11 Dennis M. Collins Awards which is given to the NCAC school that performs best across the conference’s 23 sponsored sports: 11 for men and 12 for women. Denison additionally has 45 club and intramural sports.

Student clubs

Denison has ten active fraternities and five sororities. Currently, fraternity/sorority participation by students is about 38%, with more women participating than men. Approximately 24% of undergraduate men are involved in fraternities and about 30% of women are members in a sorority, although student publications have argued that this number is actually significantly higher.

Accreditation

Denison is accredited by the Commission on Institutions of the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools and certified by the Ohio Board of Regents to grant Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, and Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees. Denison’s pre-med program is recognized by all medical schools accredited by the Association of American Medical Colleges.
