Beloit, Wisconsin, United States
Beloit College engages the intelligence, imagination, and curiosity of its students, empowering them to lead fulfilling lives marked by high achievement, personal responsibility, and public contribution in a diverse society.

History

Beloit College was chartered by a group of educated, innovative New Englanders in 1846—two years before the Wisconsin territory became a state. Since then, our students, faculty, and staff have created a campus that seeks to push boundaries, defy expectations, challenge societal norms. That’s just the Beloit way.

Education

With a liberal arts education, Beloit students always find a way to make their college experience their own. Beloiters inherently march to the beat of their own drums. With a liberal arts education under your belt, you learn to love dabbling in a bit of everything. You take a geology class on a whim and are surprised by how much you love it. You attend an interest meeting for Art House and decide to live there next semester. You become a DJ for student radio station WBCR. You add a political science minor because your favorite professor recommends you, and you think, why not?

Research

Diversity Leaders are faculty and staff members who have successfully completed either the pedagogy series, curriculum workshop, or have been part of a peer coaching team. Leaders undertake either nine or 12-month projects in collaboration with 3-4 student Inclusion Fellows.

Career

Each year, the Career and Community Engagement Center offers day-long, fall break “In Practice Trips,” which allow selected students to explore a field of interest, such as health care, environmental studies, or social entrepreneurship. The next In Practice Trip will be announced in August 2020.

Student services

Students from around the world have been an integral part of Beloit College since early in the college’s history. Whether you spend a semester or four years at the college, you have the opportunity to take advantage of its full range of curricular and co-curricular possibilities.  Staff in the Office of International Education will partner with you to help you achieve your goals. Our aim is to connect you with the resources that will help you be successful.

Housing services

As a first-year student you’ll live in a traditional residence hall . Most new students live in doubles unless you’re lucky and land a single in the ’64 Halls, Aldrich, or 819 Clary Street.

Who will you live with? We match roommates based on interests, sleep and study habits, social style, and whether you’re a neat freak or a bit messier. Your RA will help you settle in and offer support for any Res Life concerns.

ICT services

LITS designs, builds, documents, and supports the audio-visual and computing systems in campus classrooms, computer labs, event venues, and other spaces.

Most campus presentation and learning spaces are equipped with integrated audio-visual equipment. Visit the LITS Knowledge Base for detailed information and usage instructions on the technology in specific spaces.

Medical services

  • Security officers available around the clock, 365 days a year
  • 20 emergency phones in public spaces across campus
  • On call staff available 24/7 to offer immediate assistance.
  • A college notification system to send real-time alerts through voicemail, text, email, and social media in an emergency
  • Emergency evacuation maps posted prominently in all dorms

Campus life

Located at the intersection of the Rock River and Turtle Creek, Beloit’s hometown is an industrial city reborn. The downtown core near campus once housed a machine-parts foundry. Now it’s home to our center for entrepreneurship and the Powerhouse, a world-class student center/athletic facility we built in a decommissioned power plant. You’ll also find galleries, shops, riverside bike trails, tech start-ups, and an urban farmers market nearby.

Sports facilities

Throughout most of the last century, it was spaces like the Smith Student Union where faculty and students, the studious and the not-so-studious, mingled and worked together. A central gathering space has been missing from campus for more than 30 years. That has changed. The Powerhouse is a $38 million project that repurposes the decommissioned Blackhawk Generating Station on the Rock River into a 120,000-square-foot student center in every sense of the phrase.

Student clubs

Beloiters have a wide array of interests outside the classroom. Dungeons & Dragons. Art. Ultimate frisbee. Planning concerts and campus events. Yoga. If you like it, chances are good that you’ll find someone else who does, too. Beloit currently offers over 60 clubs, and if they don’t have what you’re looking for, you and your friends can create your own.

Accreditation

Beloit College is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
