History
Founded in 1892, WSSU enjoys a distinguished reputation as a historically black constituent institution of the University of North Carolina that offers a rich curriculum rooted in a high-quality, liberal education. Our undergraduate and graduate students can choose from many innovative areas of study designed to equip them with the skills and knowledge needed to develop creative solutions.
Education
WSSU offers: 34 baccalaureate degrees; 50 undergraduate minors; 7 master's degrees; 2 professional doctorate degrees; and 6 post-baccalaureate certifications.
Research
WSSU faculty and students engage in life changing research for our communities by exploring ways to improve daily life, health, and economic opportunities for diverse populations. Our primary research areas of impact include: Health Science, Humanities, Social Science and STEM.
Researchers engaged with our centers and institutes have opportunities to solve community based problems and really make a difference. Together, we are addressing the economic and social challenges that impact our region, North Carolina and beyond.
Career
Career Development Services (CDS) works with WSSU students and alumni during all phases of the career development process. Career Development Services offers a full range of resources and services to assist you in developing the necessary strategies and skills which will distinguish you as a professional. CDS staff members want to help you learn about your skills and interests, and articulate them confidently in resumes, cover letters, interviews, and personal statements; identify and explore career options that you might pursue; and implement an effective strategy to attain your desired career outcomes.

WSSU Perks
I like how individual and authentic WSSU is . I love how they are able to cater to each students needs to be able to set them up for success. It�s easy to feel welcome here and to find extracurriculars and clubs you really like. Although everything else is good we could have better retail food places on campus.

Overall, the school is great. The Academics are great and everyone I have met here is really nice. I feel with this school overall they cared about their students succeed and they give up a whole bunch of opportunities (events, networking, etc.) to do so.

Student services
The Student Centers Office features two unique facilities devoted to meeting the demanding responsibility of serving students, faculty, staff, alumni, and guest. This Office provides facilities, programs, services, leadership, and involvement opportunities that enhance the social, educational, recreational and cultural environment of Winston-Salem State University.
Housing services
Your residence hall is your “home away from home.” We offer you a safe, caring, and comfortable living space that allows you to have fun and make friends while pursuing your academic goals. Be part of learning experiences that expand your horizons and prepare you for life in the 21st century global community. Live and learn alongside diverse people and seek guidance from our professional staff.
Library services
The C.G. O'Kelly Library creates an environment that supports and enhances all Winston-Salem State University programs. The staff instructs and assists users with all aspects of library services to foster and instill life-long learning.
ICT services
The Office of Information Technology provides centralized technology support, execution of technology standards, adoption of technology methodologies, collaboration and centralization of systems, guidance and directives of new technologies, provisions for best practices, and leadership and coordination of technology initiatives to support the faculty, staff and students.
Medical services
The Alexander H. Ray Student Health Services (part of the Wellness Center) at Winston-Salem State University is an outpatient facility providing a variety of health care services to the student population. All students enrolled at WSSU are eligible to use the health service.
Sports facilities
The Donald Julian Reaves Student Center combines a full fitness facility and student union. University Recreation fills the east side of the building, with three floors of amenities. The Third Floor features a running track, boxing area, a group fitness room, a cycling studio, a TRX group training system, and a functional training area. The Second floor showcases the cardio workout area and locker rooms. The first floor hosts two basketball courts, our equipment checkout desk and our weight room.
Student clubs
Winston-Salem State University has 100+ registered student organizations to meet almost any of your social organization needs. Involvement in campus organizations can be both a rewarding and an educational experience. There are many benefits to joining a student organization: making friends, developing and using new skills and abilities, becoming part of a team, learning to set and achieve goals and just enjoying yourself.
