About

History

SUNY Maritime College was founded in 1874 as the New York Nautical School, an institution dedicated to training merchant mariners to work and live at sea. Since then, the college has expanded its focus to include educating and training men and women to pursue careers on land and at sea. Maritime College operates under a model of shared governance.

Education

Students choose from 11 undergraduate majors, including five ABET-accredited engineering programs, and two master's degree programs. 

Research

The Office of Institutional Research provides official data intended to assist with the planning and decision-making process of the college and to comply with SUNY, state and federal regulations. 

Career

Maritime College is in the second year of implementing its strategic plan, “Charting a New Course.” The plan emerged over the course of 18 months in consultation with stakeholder groups including alumni, industry executives, faculty, staff and corporate recruiters. The plan contains a robust and dynamic series of goals and actions that will prepare the college, its students and the industries we serve for a rapidly changing world.

Student services

The mission of the Office of Institutional Research and Assessment is to provide comprehensive, accurate, and timely information and data analysis to support strategic planning, decision making, resource allocation, and assessment efforts to support the college’s mission of ”educating dynamic leaders for the global maritime industry.”

The Office of Institutional Research and Assessment will be the catalyst for a Maritime College culture that embraces data-informed decision making and assessment processes which advance the college’s vision of being “recognized as the leading maritime educational institution.”

Housing services

The Office of Housing and Residential Life (OHRL) is excited to have you as a member of our on-campus living community. This Guide to Campus Housing is intended to give you and your neighbors a common set of expectations by which you can all live and learn together to achieve academic success, build on skills to prepare for your career, and develop lasting friendships. The mission of SUNY Maritime College (“College”) is to provide safe accommodations for our residents. Our goal is to create a sense of community that encourages students’ development of respect, social responsibility, integrity, ethical leadership, and independence.

Campus life

Welcome and congratulations on joining the SUNY Maritime College community, home to over 1,400 on-campus residents. Our mission is to provide safe residential accommodations for our student residents. We want to create a sense of community that encourages development of respect, social responsibility, integrity, ethical leadership, and independence.

Sports facilities

The Office of Athletics offers a wide array of sport activities, fitness programs and recreational facilities for the entire campus community. And if playing isn’t your thing, we hope to see you in the stands cheering for the Privateers!

Student clubs

Located 30 minutes from mid-town Manhattan, students participate in 17 varsity athletic teams and more than 40 clubs and organizations, ROTC options and U.S. Coast Guard license programs. The license program prepares students to navigate, power and operate marine vessels.

ABET accreditation is assurance that a college or university program meets the quality standards established by the profession for which it prepares its students.
