Founded in 1846 as the Leeds Government School of Art and Design, Leeds Arts University has contributed significantly to the development of arts education in Britain and across the world. The University boasts Henry Moore, Damien Hirst and Barbara Hepworth amongst its alumni.
In 2017 the College gained University title, becoming the only specialist arts university in the North of England.

All our undergraduate BA (Hons) and BMus (Hons) degrees are three years long, and include the option to take an additional placement year to build your experience in the creative industries.
Leeds Arts University provides a space where researchers can develop innovative and creative lines of enquiry. Research-informed teaching inspires student achievement across our curricula. Our researchers contribute to the cultural landscape locally, nationally and internationally.
In order to meet our research goals, the University has developed a supportive infrastructure. Currently, we employ two Research Fellows to engage in their own practice and to mentor others. In addition, we have a large pool of academic staff who pursue their own research interests.
Our researchers specialise in many diverse fields; from surrealism to social practice and widening participation.

The professional modules on your course give you the opportunity to research the creative industries and identify companies you’d like to approach. Employers also regularly approach the University to see if we have any students suitable to be placed with them.

The University works with two accommodation providers to reserve rooms for students studying at Leeds Arts University. Both Car Mills and The Leatherworks are well located, just a short walk from our Blenheim Walk campus, and offer a choice over cost and facilities.
Carr Mills is a modern student development offering rooms in 5, 6 and 7 bedroom flats, located just 15 minutes' walk from the University and a short bus journey into Leeds city centre. The majority of the rooms are en-suite.
The Leather Works offers a wide range of amenities designed to enhance the student experience. Located just a short bus ride into the centre of Leeds, and a 20-minute walk from Leeds Arts University.
Our specialist art library holds an impressive collection of creative arts and design books and media. It also has resources on contextualising subjects like cultural studies, politics, psychology and sociology to support students’ wide-ranging curiosity.
The library also provides access to academic journals, eBooks, industry-grade insights and online databases with abundant visual content.
Students also have access to computer suites with networks of Apple Mac computers featuring regularly updated, industry-standard software for a wide range of creative applications.
We have a friendly IT helpdesk that can provide help for computer queries, and expert technicians to help students get to drips with software and technology, such as drawing tablets and the Adobe Creative Suite.
The nearest GP practice for students is Leeds Student Medical Practice, and the nearest hospital is Leeds General Infirmary, both are less than 10 minutes walk from campus.
The nearest sexual health clinic is The Centre for Sexual Health, which is 10 minutes walk away from campus, and the nearest NHS dentist for students is New Smile Dental Care which is 5 minutes walk from campus.
Higher Education students are based at our Blenheim Walk campus, just a short walk from the city centre in the heart of the university district.
Students have access to industry-standard workshops and equipment relevant to their course area, including printmaking, digital print, ceramics and glass, wood, metals and plastics, 3D printers, photographic lighting studios, filmmaking studios, analogue/digital recording studios and an auditorium.

Leeds Arts Union offers a range of fitness and sporting activities: a netball and football team which compete in local leagues, a twice weekly calendar of fitness classes including yoga and Pilates and a weekly running club.
The Students’ Union host a variety of events to enhance the student experience, hosting a variety of societies, many of which provide additional cultural and arts opportunities.
Students are given an opportunity to sell their work at themed art markets, to perform at events including the annual Winter Party, to provide event photography, to promote events and to participate in public exhibitions both in the University and in external venues.
We have annual graduate shows where the whole University becomes an open events space/gallery to celebrate students’ work across all creative disciplines including a fashion catwalk show; film showcase; music performances and poetry readings.
