Although the Uniformed Services University was chartered by an act of Congress on September 21, 1972, the university story really begins decades earlier.
Founding members began the daunting task of actualizing the university. The first order of business was to ensure USU was a center of academic and scientific excellence.
The mission of the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences is to educate, train and prepare uniformed services health professionals, officers and leaders to directly support the Military Health System, the National Security and National Defense Strategies of the United States, and the readiness of our Armed Forces.
The University's research program covers a range of clinical and other topics important to both the military and public health. Infectious diseases, trauma medicine, health maintenance, and cancer are areas of particular strength. Researchers are also making important new efforts in state-of-the-art fields that cut across disciplines, such as genomics, proteomics, and drug-delivery mechanisms.Research at USU is administered through the Office of Research or by grant agreements with the Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine or other non-profit foundations.
Graduates are capable of developing and managing an occupational health program for military and civilian personnel anywhere in the world. Graduates are often leaders of the safety and occupational health team and they are aware of their duties and responsibilities to the other members of the occupational health team.

Military housing is available to military students at some of the military installations in the area. The Learning Resource Center provides world-class and worldwide access to current, comprehensive, and historical medical information sources; educates users on the most efficient research methods, resources, and management; facilitates users’ technology experiences; and preserves and provides access to University scholarship.

The Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) accredits degree-granting colleges and universities in the Middle States region: Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and several locations internationally. This is the Commission that will consider USU for institutional reaccreditation in 2013.
