History
It was founded as a teacher's college in 1913. Over the last century, he have grown from an institution focused solely on teacher education to an accredited university with extensive research facilities.
Education
We have about 7,000 students and 534 faculty members. We offer a wide array of academic choices, with 51 majors and 12 graduate programs in three Colleges. Faculty members are among the top teachers and researchers in their fields. Programs in natural resources and sciences are nationally known, while visual and performing arts are also popular areas of study. Throughout the curriculum, students find a long-standing commitment to social and environmental responsibility.
Research
Students can study with the world's foremost expert on redwood trees and with leading experts in sustainable energy systems. In the cutting edge Fire Lab, students study the properties of forest fires, and in the Schatz Energy Research Center student engineers are working on real-world issues like bringing sustainable lighting to the developing world. Students create their own theatre productions, study the mechanics of walking in the Human Performance Lab, work with young children in the Child Development Lab and more. Possibilities abound for real-world research experience available to undergraduates—something few other universities can boast.
Career
The Academic and Career Advising Center will be recognized university-wide as an integral resource for actively engaging students in exploring and achieving their academic and career aspirations. We are preparing students to make meaningful contributions to our global society upon their graduation from HSU.

Cal poly Humboldt review
The school felt like a tight knit community that allows for people to be who they are and not be discriminated for it. The school also ran many events which were typically free for students to go to and enjoy. As an art major, I felt like the art department was very involved in making the school feel more alive, especially with some student ran art galleries as well as other art galleries in which people from the community can put in their works.
Kind teachers
The university provides a clear and well-paced educational experience. The structure of the curriculum is designed to help students gradually increase their knowledge. Topics are presented in an understandable manner, and concepts develop organically. In addition to their expertise, the teachers are kind and patient. Before continuing, they ensure that students comprehend each subject. The labs are always ready, the equipment is in good working order, and the classrooms are consistently clean. The campus is well-maintained, serene, and designed to make navigating between classes stress-free.
Comfortable campus
Each course builds from the ground up, allowing students to fully understand concepts; the teachers are always kind and provide clear, helpful instruction; they take the time to check on each student's progress; the facilities are equally supportive�everything is in working order, clean, and available when needed; the study areas are quiet and comfortable; the campus itself is straightforward, with clear paths, plenty of space, and a quiet setting that keeps students focused; all of this makes for a complete and enjoyable learning environment.

Housing services
- Living on campus is a great way to meet friends and get connected to all HSU has to offer. As an on-campus resident you’ll be at the heart of a university committed to your academic success. Whether you live on or off campus, HSU has resources to make you feel at home.
- Humboldt State is home to plenty of great eateries. They range from small markets and coffee shops to a full-service cafeteria and a food court. There’s even a full-service restaurant. Healthy options and local products are plentiful.
Library services
The mission of the Library at California State Polytechnic University, Humboldt is to provide the information, collections, and services that are necessary to support the instructional programs, research, and outreach services of Humboldt State University.
ICT services
Information Technology Services (ITS) is responsible for all aspects of innovation, implementation and maintenance of information technology across the California State Polytechnic University, Humboldt campus, as well as integration with appropriate IT services across the other 22 California State University system campuses and the Chancellor's Office.
Medical services
- Student Health Services support the academic mission of the university by assisting students to strive toward an optimum level of personal health and wellness.
- The medical team of Student Health and Counseling provides high quality, confidential, and culturally appropriate care in a welcoming environment.
Campus life
The apartments and residence halls are located in a spectacular setting–on the edge of a 2,500-acre Redwood forest–and yet just a short walk from the heart of campus.
Sports facilities
The Recreational Sports department houses both Intramurals and Sport Clubs. The Intramural Sports Program at HSU is designed to offer students, faculty/staff and community members recreational activities in which they can participate on campus. Intramural Sports offers team sports in a variety of competitive levels, depending on the participants' skill level and interests. Sport Clubs provide students with leadership opportunities and a more rigorous athletic experience. Teams practice 2-3 times per week and compete against other off-campus clubs and Universities. Rec Sports also administers three (3) RECREATIONAL TIER clubs.
Student clubs
The mission of the Clubs and Activities Office is to support safe and inclusive opportunities for student involvement and engagement. We do this by approving and supporting student clubs and organizations, providing opportunities for leadership development, assisting with event management and by fulfilling our role as a student club and organization liaisons.
