Chang Gung University was established in April 1987 as Chang Gung Medical College, with the mission of training outstanding medical personnel. To meet the needs of the country's economic development, it later added departments and graduate schools of engineering and management, broadening its instructional resources and educating talented workers in medicine, engineering, and management.
The University currently consists of the College of Medicine, College of Engineering, and College of Management; under which are undergraduate programs that include many different departments.

The main mission of the Office of Student Affairs is to cultivate a campus environment that is conducive for learning, where it may care for and assist the students, both physically and mentally.

The Chang Gung University Library houses an audiovisual center, book and periodical stacks, an online search room, group study rooms, and study areas.
The library serves the programs of study and research of the University's teachers and students with its extensive collection of literature in medical science, engineering, management, and humanities and social sciences.
The Computer Center owns six computer labs and one maintenance desk. Computer labs are open to all faculties and students of the university.
The maintenance desk provides maintenance services to all personal computers at the campus. The Center also provides an advanced network environment to all faculty, staff and students.
Chang Gung University (CGU) is a thriving residential campus and community. It sits on 37 acres of foothills and plain at the rim of Taipei City.
The University's campus covers an area of 37.13 hectares; major structures include the Medical Science Building, Engineering Building, Third Teaching Building, Second Medical Science Building, student dormitories, Student Activity Center, and Library.
These buildings provide a total of 354,849 square meters of floor space. There is thus approximately 60.6 square meters of campus space and 57.9 square meters indoor space per student.
The campus facilities are divided into three functional areas: teaching and research, recreation, and residential areas.
The University received its initial accreditation by the AACSB in August 2016 with a validity period of 5 years. In 2018, the university undertook the Ministry of Education's Collegiate Assessment of the Environmental Management on Campus.
