Xidian University has two campuses, north campus and south campus, occupying an area of 270 hectares, with the building area of over 1,300,000 square meters. Its two libraries boast a collection of 6.14 million volumes, of which there are about 2.34 million paper documents and about 3.8 million electronic documents, 1300 journals in foreign languages, and electronic resources in Chinese and foreign languages on 45 platforms with about 120 databases, covering all the disciplines and specialties of the university.
It has set up 16 schools — School of Telecommunications Engineering, School of Electronic Engineering, School of Computer Science and Technology, School of Mechatronic Engineering, School of Physics and Opto-electronic Engineering, School of Economics and Management, School of Humanities, School of Foreign Languages, School of Software Engineering, School of Microelectronics, School of Life Science and Technology, School of Aerospace Science and Technology, School of Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology, School of International Education, and School of Network and Continuing Education.
Xidian University is one of the institutions of higher learning in China which earliest established the specialties of information theory, information system engineering, radar, microwave antenna, electronic-mechanical engineering, and electronic countermeasure, being the forerunner of the IT discipline of China and forming distinct characteristics and advantages of electronic and information disciplines. It has 2 national first-level key disciplines (covering 6 second-level disciplines), 1 national second-level key discipline, 33 provincial/ministerial-level key disciplines, 12 first-level disciplines with the right to award doctoral degrees, 20 first-level disciplines with the right to award master’s degrees, 9 postdoctoral programs, and 50 undergraduate specialties. In the national third-round assessment of the first-level disciplines in China, its“information and communication engineering” ranked second and its“electronic science and technology”ranked fourth.
For many years, Xidian University has been committed to system research, key problem tackling, and engineering development in the field of electronic information technology, creating manyfirsts in that field, including the first weather radar, the first meteoric trail communication system, the first programmable radar signal processor, the first millimeter wave communication machine, as well as the first cord telegraph switching equipment, the first tower tube cavity oscillator, the first three dimensional phase array radar, etc. in the history of our armys communication equipment, thus making significant contributions to the informationization of our country and to the modernization of our national defense. It has now 4 state key laboratories, 5 Ministry of Education key laboratories, 17 provincial/ministerial level key laboratories, and 6 provincial/ministerial level bases.
Xidian University vigorously strengthens the production-study-research combination and constantly strengthens its sci-tech innovation ability. It has established the Shaanxi Provincial Industry Research Institute and the National University Sci-tech Park. At the same time, combining with the large-scale well-known enterprises and institutions at home, it has established joint-stock companies and strategic alliances, set up enterprise funds, built joint laboratories, and founded practice bases for postgraduates, thus effectively promoting the transformation of research achievements.
