1994 - 2014 was an exciting time for Southern Cross University as it evolved from what was a Teachers College, in the 1970s, into a fully-fledged University with its own identity in 1994.

For 20 years, Southern Cross University has been conducting research and research training that has global and regional impact and relevance. It is has developed world-class expertise across a range of research fields, and in the 2012 Excellence in Research for Australia national report received the top rating of 'well above world standard' in six key research areas.
Southern Cross University has libraries at each of its Lismore, Gold Coast and Coffs Harbour campuses. The libraries provide quiet study areas, collaborative spaces, bookable group study rooms, computing and wireless facilities, and access to online and print resources. The University also provides study centres in Grafton and Byron Bay for students to use for individual or group study.

SCU students at the Gold Coast and Lismore have access to the SCU Health Clinic’s general practitioners who can provide bulk-billed medical services. Services vary depending on location of the clinic.

Southern Cross University’s Lismore campus has two main sports areas which are used by SCU students/staff, SCU clubs and the general public. These are: The Maurie Ryan Oval and the Darrel Chapman Sports Facility. The latter includes 4 × tennis courts, 2 × netball courts and 2 × basketball courts plus BBQ area and toilet block with lights.
Joining an SCU club/society or playing in a community sporting/recreation team or group is a great way to meet people and pursue an interest outside your academic life here at SCU.
