About

History

Ural University is the oldest higher educational institution in the Ural region. It was founded in Ekaterinburg in 1920. After some time the University split into two: Ural State University (USU), specializing in fundamental, natural and mathematical sciences, humanities and social studies, and Ural Polytechnic Institute.

Education

Ural Federal University offers 293 educational programs of higher education and 27 programs of secondary vocational education, alongside with professional retraining and development courses, MBA programs and foundation programs for new applicants. The university structure includes 18 institutes with more than 250 departments. UrFU has a wide branch network.

Research

To form the research, education and innovation cluster in the Ural Federal District, become the leader in the spheres of natural sciences, engineering and humanities and join the ranks of the global leading educational and competence centres. 

The strategic aim for the University at the first stage of the Development plan is to become the leader among Russian federal universities and higher educational institutions of the Ural Federal District in the spheres of education, research and innovation. 

Priority Research Areas: 4 (Information Technologies and Human Being in the Information Society; Power Engineering, Resource Saving and Environmental Management; Flexible Technologies; Living Systems and Health).

Career

UrFU Center for Career and Employers Relations was established in 2004. The main goal of the center is to assist students and graduates in finding employment.

One of the main indicators of graduates’ employability is the percentage of graduates who find employment after a year from graduation. This indicator for Ural Federal University is about 90%; almost 80% of graduates work in their degree field.

Services

Student services

Students' Union is the core body of students’ self-government at Ural Federal University; more than 50% of the students are members of Students’ Union. The main goals of the Union are to protect student’s rights, to improve of education quality, to give students possibilities of project implementation and creative abilities development, to unite students for to solve university self-governmental problems.  There are 22 commissions in the structure of Students’ Union. Union Section functions in the institutes. In 2004 Students’ Union became a laureate of All-Russian Contest of Self-Governmental Bodies of Russian Universities.

Housing services

International students can choose to stay on-campus in one of UrFU dormitories or rent an apartment or room off-campus. In case they opt for the second variant, they can contact UrFU Student Union , and they will help them in the search for a home. The accommodation fee is approximately 1200 rubles a month. Please contact your manager for prices details.

Library services

UrFU Library is the largest university library in the region with the stock of more than 3 million units. There are more than 48 000 readers today. The structure of the Library includes: 8 lending libraries, 8 reading halls, 3 information centers.

Medical services

All foreign citizens are required to have a medical insurance certificate on the territory of Russia. The certificate can be bought in any insurance company in Ekaterinburg or your home country (specifying " valid on the territory of the Russian Federation").

Student Life

Campus life

UrFU campus includes 14 educational buildings, 13 dormitories, 13 sports facilities; campus buildings are located in two districts, both close to the city center. In the walking distance from the academic buildings and dorms there are cafes and restaurants, supermarkets and other necessary facilities. On campus there are canteens and cafeterias, ATM, a bank branch (SKB bank), a gift shop.

Sports facilities

UrFU sport facilities include winter stadiums, 11 specialized sports halls, two ski resorts, ice skating rink and 14 athletic fields on the territory of the campus. New sports complex was opened in 2007 and in 2011 the construction of University swimming-pool was finished.
