School of Mathematics

The School of Mathematics is internationally renowned for its world-leading research and research-led teaching. The school is committed to providing a first rate education to all of its students in a friendly and supportive environment.


The School of Mathematics is one of nine schools in College of Engineerign and Physical Sciences. The school is situated in the Watson Building on the main Edgbaston campus of the University of Birmingham. There are about 50 academic staff, 15 research staff, 10 support staff, 60 postgraduate students and 600 undergraduate students.

  • The school conducts research in a broad range of pure mathematics, applied mathematics and statistics. There are flourishing research groups in algebra, analysis, applied analysis, combinatorics, fluid dynamics, numerical analysis, optimisation and statistics.
  • Our research involves international and multidisciplinary collaboration and is supported through the Birmingham Mathematical Institute.
  • In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise the vast majority of our research was rated as internationally recognised with a good proportion of the research considered world-leading.
