This Elementary and Middle School Science Education option at California State University Long Beach is designed for teachers who are K-8 generalists. It may also be appropriate for Single Subject teachers interested in increasing the breadth of their scientific knowledge.

Overview

The department maintains close ties with teachers, schools and informal science institutions in the greater Long Beach area. It undertakes projects aimed at pre-K through university students. From the Head Start on Science project which develops a "sense of wonder" and excitement preschool and Kindergarten children, their teachers and parents to outreach and professional development for inservice elementary and secondary teachers, and support for preservice teachers and informal science educators, the department hosts a wide variety of grants and projects impacting the entire preK-16 and informal science education community. The programme

Although aimed at those with a Multiple Subject credential, the program may also be appropriate for Single Subject teachers interested in increasing the breadth of their scientific knowledge. Students completing this option will be prepared to assume positions of greater science leadership at their schools or districts, or go on to further graduate study in Science Education.

Other requirements

General requirements

  • A California Multiple Subject credential, Single Subject Science Teaching credential, or other instructional experience deemed equivalent by the Graduate Studies Committee. In the case of informal science educators, this must be evidenced by letters from employers provided on institutional letterhead;
  • A GPA of at least 3.0 for the last 60 units of study completed
  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited university or college.
  • A good standing at the last institution attended.
  • At least a 2.5 grade point average in the last 60 upper division semester units attempted, independent of when and where the baccalaureate was granted. The entire semester or quarter in which the 60 units began will be used in this calculation
