Overview

This certificate provides knowledge and skills in the field of course design, development, and delivery at a distance, with a focus on e-learning. It addresses the need of e-learning professionals, who are engaged in online course development and delivery. Students will take four courses covering topics in the areas of training at a distance, the use of technology in distance education, and instructional design. UMUC brings its expertise in distance education and technology, while UMBC brings it expertise in instructional design and course development.

Accreditation

University of Maryland University College is regionally accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, 3624 Market Street, Philadelphia, PA 19104 (267-284-5000), one of the six regional accrediting agencies recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

UMUC is governed by the University System of Maryland Board of Regents and certified by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia.

About Accreditation

Accreditation denotes an organization of institutional quality. Once an organization opens itself to outside examination, a regional or national accrediting body reviews specific standards and criteria and offers the institution opportunities for self-improvement. The Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and the United States Department of Education (USDE) evaluate and recognize accrediting bodies that meet their standards.

Regional Accreditation vs. National Accreditation

Public and private universities and colleges that offer a wide range of programs typically hold regional accreditation. To receive regional accreditation, a university must pass a peer review by faculty and administrators from similar institutions. All of the institutions within the University System of Maryland, including UMUC, are regionally accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, the accrediting body available to Maryland and surrounding states.

Another type of accreditation, national accreditation, is provided by accrediting agencies that are generally single-purpose, narrow in scope, or vocational in nature. For example, cosmetology programs, faith-based institutions, law programs, medical programs, etc., have their own program-specific accrediting agencies. Large public colleges and universities do not typically hold national accreditation, though they may have individual programs that are nationally accredited.

General technical requirements for using UMUC's online classroom include: A computer running a compatible Web browser A connection to the Internet An e-mail account Speakers or headphones to hear audio from a computer Virus protection software (updated regularly) Browsers: Online classes are accessible using a variety of Web browsers. Google Chrome is typically the most reliable browser for using both LEO and WebTycho. The following popular browsers are available for free download Google Chrome Microsoft Internet Explorer Mozilla Firefox Internet Access: Students are responsible for their own Internet access and a high-speed connection is recommended. E-Mail Account: All UMUC students are required to provide an active e-mail account where they can receive messages from the University. Students may use their UMUC e-mail address, or they may use a personal, work, or other e-mail address.
