Overview
In the AI Fundamentals track from Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), you study Artificial Intelligence at the level of its foundations. Instead of focusing only on existing tools and applications, you explore the mathematical, computational, and theoretical principles behind modern artificial intelligence. You learn how models, data, and algorithms interact, and how their assumptions, limitations, guarantees, and uncertainties influence the systems we build.
This unique track brings together mathematics, computer science, and data science in a single curriculum. It is designed for ambitious and analytical strong students from all three disciplines, from the Netherlands and internationally.
After graduation
With rapid advancements of Artificial Intelligence, the need for engineers and researchers with a master level expertise of mathematical and computational foundations of AI is increasing. Upon graduation, you will become an engineer or researcher ready for advanced technical roles or a PhD trajectory. You may work as a machine learning engineer, research engineer/scientist, data scientist with a theoryâdriven focus, AI reliability/robustness specialist, optimization or modeling engineer, and algorithm developer.
You may end up working in companies like ASML, NXP, Signify, Philips, booking.com, bol.com, or other companies and organizations in healthcare, finance or public sector. The researchâoriented thesis also provides a strong pathway to doctoral programs in AI, machine learning, and applied mathematics.

General requirements
- To enroll, strong mathematical skills are required. With a BA degree in Mathematics, you are directly admissible. In other cases, the admissions committee determines whether your (academic) experience and motivation suffice.
- A pre-master is a great way to enter the IAM program. Students with a bachelor's degree in mathematics from a university of applied sciences (Dutch: HBO, higher vocational education) always enter by completing a pre-master first. Students with other degrees from universities of applied sciences are not considered for admission.
