News media, social media, and AI play a crucial role in how citizens are informed and how they make political choices. How do media influence our political opinions? What is the impact of disinformation on trust in institutions? And how do media function in times of polarisation? During your studies, you gain scientific knowledge about political communication, journalism, media dynamics, and public opinion, and learn to critically analyse media coverage and investigate its societal impact.

Theory, research, and analysis in realistic assignments

In CS: Media and Democracy, you combine scientific theory with critical thinking and analytical skills in your assignments. You work on current societal and political issues, sometimes in collaboration with external partners. In addition, you conduct scientific research on the relationship between media, citizens, and democratic institutions, learning to substantiate how media influence democratic processes.

Programme Structure

In the first semester of the Media and Democracy program, you will follow the courses 'Source to Story: Creating Public Debate' and 'Headlines to Mindset: Shaping Public Opinion'. You will also complete two method courses that focus on innovative approaches of collecting and analysing data. Additionally, you will follow Impact with Media and Democracy in the first semester, a course designed to help you apply scientific research to real-world communication challenges.

In the second semester, you will choose two electives to broaden your knowledge or dive deeper into specific topics. The electives include Communication Technology in Organizations, Branding and Design, Social Marketing, Storytelling: the Persuasive Power of Narratives, Privacy, Self-disclosure and Big Data, and Social Robotics. You will also start your Master’s thesis in the second semester.

The Admission Board needs to establish that you meet all of the following admission requirements:

You have obtained at least 10 ECTS for quantitative statistics at the level of the subjects S_BIS (Descriptive and Inferential Statistics) + S_KWOM (Quantitative research methods). You are knowledgeable about multiple regression, (M)ANOVA, factor analysis, moderation and mediation analysis

You have obtained at least 10 ECTS for subjects with content related to communication science

You have experience in conducting empirical research

In all cases, your bachelor must be equivalent to a Dutch academic (WO) bachelor and therefore must be completed at a research university.
