UToledo graduate students can receive training to become one of two types of professionals:

School counselors

Clinical mental-health counselors

UToledo prepares you to work with clients dealing with life issues, such as substance abuse, mental and emotional disorders, family and marriage difficulties and career challenges.

The Counselor Education program at The University of Toledo provides the theoretical foundation and clinical training necessary for you to obtain licensure as:

A professional counselor through the Counselor, Social Worker and Marriage & Family Therapist Board

A professional school counselor through the Ohio Department of Education.

Career

UToledo has deep relationships in the regional mental-health community and with numerous school districts that will help you with field placements and your job search after graduation.

General requirements

College of Graduate Studies application for the master’s degree in school counseling
Transcripts of an undergraduate degree with a 3.0 or equivalent cumulative grade point average on a 4-point scale for all undergraduate study at all institutions attended.
A typed, written personal statement (suggested length 2-3 pages) detailing significant personal and professional experiences that relate to the applicant’s decision to pursue a career in counseling (e.g., rationale for seeking degree, commitment to counseling as a profession). The personal statement should also address such topics as the applicant’s skills or knowledge, preparation through education and/or experience, strengths and weaknesses, rationale for academic deficiencies, etc.
A professional résumé
Three letters of recommendation, at least one of which must address the applicant’s academic potential (i.e. from a university faculty member)
