Overview
The MFA Communication at the Royal College of Art allows you to bring together your transformed approach as you design, produce and promote a project that re-defines the direction you want to take. Students work with anything from digital media, to food, fashion to film, painting to installation as they push boundaries and redefine not just their own practice but the very idea of what a practice can be.
Key facts
Through critical and creative experimentation, the programme has developed a studio-based culture of critical thinking through making. With a global student body, MFA students come from a wide range of creative, cultural and philosophical backgrounds and together challenge and expand the notion of what communication is and can be. With a strong ethos of professional collaboration, this year’s cohort has engaged with international partners, including Save the Children, Friends of the Earth and Fosters Architects.
The MFA Communication is fast emerging as the place to challenge and radically transform communication practices.
- Transform and redefine your professional communication practice.
- Construct a bespoke interdisciplinary programme by choosing from electives provided by each of the RCA’s four Schools.
- Become part of an international interdisciplinary community.
- Fit study around your career with our part-time option.
How does communication influence the way we interact with the world around us? To answer this question, you will be encouraged to draw inspiration from a range of different methods and methodologies designed to deepen your critical reflection and augment your creative approach as you transform and redefine your professional communication practice. Interdisciplinarity is put into action in a programme that combines theory and practice, while engaging in playful experimentation.
Programme Structure
Courses include:
- In Term 1, you take Communication and Interdisciplinarity, which introduces you to different methods and approaches to working in a multidisciplinary communication community. You also take Cultures and Contexts, where you reflect on how your existing skills and discipline can apply in new contexts. In addition, you choose two electives from across the RCA Schools.
- In Term 2, you take Methods & Methodologies, in which you test and develop emerging practices and articulate them into clear methods. You also take Consolidating Your Practice, where you plan and prepare your final research project through pre‑production, forming a practical and tested proposal.
- In Term 3, you take your Independent Research Project. In this unit, you design and realise a body of work (individual or collaborative), supported by a tutor, and consider how you will present or disseminate your work professionally (e.g., event, publication).
