Overview
Teaching is empowered by specialist Swansea University expertise, particularly in the areas of gender, warfare, aristocratic culture, and frontiers and borderlands.
You have the chance to develop a formidable knowledge base about the medieval heritage of south Wales and the surrounding region.
Your Medieval Studies Experience
You will study a set number of optional 20-credit modules, before undertaking a 60-credit dissertation project of your choosing in the second part of the course.
Varied modules include an introduction to advanced medieval studies, discovering Old English, Latin texts, the Normans in Western Europe and the Mediterranean, and reading medieval manuscripts.
At Swansea you will find a rich array of research resources for postgraduate study. As well as the general holdings in the University library, the National Library of Wales at Aberystwyth is within travelling distance and we work closely with the National Galleries and Museums of Wales.
There is a postgraduate common room and an electronic resources room available in the James Callaghan Building.
Your studies will benefit from an unusually high concentration of historians at Swansea, as well as the wider presence of the College of Arts and Humanities Research Centres, the Callaghan Centre for the Study of Conflict, Power and Empires, and the Richard Burton Centre.
Career
You will develop impressive transferable skills around research, writing and speaking, as you build confidence in presenting your ideas in different ways.
Graduates from this Medieval Studies programme from Swansea University enter a range of industries including education, government, marketing and advertising. They also undertake research degrees and pursue a career in academia.
