Overview

In the master's specialisation Bio-Pharmaceutical Sciences and Business Studies, you combine high quality research in Bio-Pharmaceutical Sciences with training in management and entrepreneurship.

The master's specialisation Business Studies bridges science and business by focusing on areas such as technology management, innovation, entrepreneurship, operations and decision making. You will learn about analytical frameworks and skills for managerial decision making. The emphasis of the business specialisation is on the application of these frameworks and skills in the context of R&D-intensive organisations. After completion, you have obtained the necessary knowledge and skills to take on managerial responsibilities in your work.

What you will learn

The specialisation Bio-Pharmaceutical Sciences and Business Studies consists of 60 EC in Bio-Pharmaceutical Sciences, 40-60 EC in Science Communication and Society and 0-20 EC electives.

In addition to general achievements, graduates of the master programme BPS with the specialisation Business Studies have reached the following specific achievement levels:

a. insight in managerial issues related to knowledge-intensive businesses and basic theoretical skills in business disciplines most relevant to working in these businesses;

b. the ability to make a plan for a new business or an innovation project;

c. experience with performing business activities in an existing company or organisation or directed towards technology-based business creation.

Career prospects

Students are trained for a research career in drug research and development, not for a career as a (public) pharmacist. Most graduates proceed to a PhD training at Leiden University or another university. Graduates from the LACDR are in great demand in the pharmaceutical industry and in other research institutes. An extensive worldwide network of research contacts allows students to obtain research experience abroad during their MSc or PhD studies.

Students with the specialisation Bio-Pharmaceutical Sciences and Business Studies are also prepared for a management career in industry from a BPS research perspective. The Business Studies specialisation enables you to broaden your scope outside BPS research and to learn about technology commercialization and business development.
