Overview

The Biology and Business Studies MSc programme at Leiden University bridges science and business by focusing on areas such as technology management, innovation, entrepreneurship, operations and decision making.

You will learn about analytical frameworks and skills for managerial decision making. The emphasis of the Biology and Business Studies specialisation, at Leiden University, is on the application of these frameworks and skills in the context of R&D-intensive organisations. After completion, you have obtained the necessary knowledge and skills to take on managerial responsibilities in your work.

Then, Biology and Business Studies is the master’s specialisation of choice for you. It enables you to broaden your scope outside biology research. The Business Studies specialisation offers training that is analytically rigorous and connected to practice through class discussions based on real-life business cases, company visits, guest speakers, and an internship experience.

Career Opportunities

Approximately half of our graduates choose a career in scientific research, many as a PhD student. Universities, research institutes, and medical centres are the major employers.

Other alumni work at consultancy agencies or in the public domain as policy-makers, science communicators or teachers.

Graduates also occupy management positions or have project responsibilities in a wide variety of commercial and non-commercial sectors, from bioscience-based companies to environmental management agencies. Some students even start their own company.

If you have a bachelor’s degree in Biology or in a Biology-related programme from a foreign research university with a level similar to Dutch universities, you are eligible to apply.
Biology-related programmes include e.g. natural sciences, life science, biomedical sciences, bio-pharmaceutical sciences, biotechnology and bioinformatics, environmental sciences, agricultural sciences, etc.
