Overview
The Ancient History MA programme at Leiden University will provide you with a thorough grounding in several instrumental periods of ancient history, including the complex history of the Roman Republic; Civic life in Italy, Asia Minor and Egypt; Graeco-Roman religion; and the rise of early Judaism.
You will be able to collaborate with the outstanding scholars of the ancient history department as well as scholars active in other fields of History or the related fields of Classics, Ancient Philosophy, Classical Archaeology, Religious Studies and Near Eastern Cultures.
You will be able to pursue your interest in documentary texts as an additional option, where you can access Greek inscriptions and work alongside papyrologists at the Leiden Papyrological Institute.Career prospects

Programme Structure
Programme structure:
- All courses are taught by academics, who are also active researchers. The curriculum is regularly updated to reflect contemporary academic debates and the latest insights, while regular seminars inform students of our researchers' latest findings.
- And when it comes to doing your research thesis, this might well be linked to a research project of one our faculty members. They play active roles in every student’s education, serving as both mentors and community builders.

General requirements
All applicants must meet the following requirements:
- a bachelor’s degree from a research university, equivalent to the level of a Dutch academic Bachelor’s degree, or demonstrate to meet the requirements for such a degree, including the General Academic Skills, and
- have completed historical courses on relevant topics for the chosen specialisation and of sufficient level, to an equivalent of approximately 45 EC;
- be able to conduct independent empirical research;
- be able to read academic literature and reflect critically on it;
- have a knowledge of general history and be able to present their findings (based on a critical reading of the literature or based on empirical research) in a systematic and analytical manner;
- be able to write a thesis with proper references to the literature.
