Overview
About the programme
Why choose Urban Design?
The Master's in Urban Design (MSc in Engineering) is for those who want to develop cities and urban spaces in the most sustainable way. The Master’s is relevant for you if you are curious about how people navigate through and between cities — what we call mobility, nodes and transport. As an urban designer, you work both theoretically and practically with challenges to urban development and urban planning. You will contribute to shaping cities, creating new spaces for people and new ways of moving around cities.
Educational content
Classes are conducted in English with a focus on problem-based project- and group work. You will work with urban, architectural and mobility theory and get a toolbox filled with both analogue and digital methods for analysis, design and communication. The Master’s also focuses on citizen engagement and ethnographic perspectives, and you will get hands-on experience with a variety of mapping and analysis methods. You and your fellow students will be part of a dynamic and research-based learning environment with group work, courses, lectures and exercises. You will go on excursions and field trips, collaborate with design offices, municipalities and other stakeholders, and get involved in current research projects. The Master’s also offers you access to professional inspiration and networks through seminars, open lectures, exhibitions and the annual Urban Design Day.
Your skills as a graduate
With a Master’s in Urban Design (MSc in Engineering), you will have a strong academic foundation, allowing you to work professionally with the complex connections of cities. After completing the programme, you will know how safe, equitable, inclusive, diverse cities and urban areas are created, and you will be able to solve problems related to climate change and sustainability, urban growth and shrinkage, migration, inequality and social challenges. You can use these skills professionally to conduct analyses of urban contexts, develop design proposals and communicate using drawings/models and stakeholder engagement.
Job opportunities
With a Master’s in Urban Design (MSc in Engineering), you will have strong competences in strategic urban development and the transformation of urban spaces to give people experiences and provide them with exciting new urban areas to explore. This opens the door to a wide range of job opportunities, typically in private architectural firms, in public sectors with a focus on urban planning in practice, such as municipalities and regions, in design offices and in consulting engineering companies. You can get positions such as urban planner, urban designer, mobility planner or project manager.
