Overview
At University of York , research in Archaeology is wide-ranging. Our strengths are in human evolution and prehistory; Roman; medieval; historical and field archaeology; bioarchaeology; digital archaeology; African archaeology; buildings conservation and heritage; and experimental archaeology and artefact studies. Many projects are interdisciplinary, involving collaboration with researchers beyond the Department.

- working in any field of archaeology, and wishing to develop their careers with the production of a substantial piece of original research.
We also offer the option of enrolling in a PhD in Archaeology by distance learning. You'll have the flexibility to work from anywhere in the world. We'll work with you to assess the feasibility of your distance learning degree, including any facilities and resources you may need to complete your studies. We'll discuss your training requirements and an associated timeline, which will need to be in place before you start your course.If your research topic requires use of specialised equipment and facilities, we will discuss available options with you to ensure these needs can be met for the duration of your degree. You must visit York for at least two weeks per year, with a compulsory visit at each annual progression point. In addition, you must attend a two-week induction period in York at the beginning of your degree.

Courses included:
- Candidates must register for a period of not less than six terms of full-time study, or twelve terms of part-time study, under the direction of a designated supervisor and Thesis Advisory Panel.
- In certain circumstances, students are registered provisionally for a MPhil, and confirmation of registration will be made not earlier than the end of the second term nor usually later than the end of the third term of full-time study, or for part-time students not earlier than the fourth term nor later than the sixth term (see Ordinances and Regulations, Regulation 2.4).
