Overview
The Archaeology - Digital Archaeology and Heritage programme at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam will equip you with in-depth knowledge and research skills on new methods and current themes in Archaeology.
The European and Mediterranean Archaeology track covers core digital methods and theory, including 3D visualization and virtual reconstruction, as well as advanced spatial analysis and data science. The small-scale setting of the MA programme provides the ideal setting to combine theory and practice.
Start working
Students graduating with a Master’s degree in Archaeology can be employed in positions requiring in-depth knowledge of archaeology. They also find their way into other jobs requiring a range of academic skills. Examples of sectors in which students who have followed this programme have found positions include:

General requirements
Your previous education needs to be deemed equivalent to at least a Dutch academic Bachelor’s degree obtained at a research university (nominal duration 3 years).
The Master’s programme Archaeology is open for application to students with a Bachelor’s degree in:
- Archaeology, or
- Geo-archaeology, Ancient Studies, Anthropology, History (with demonstrable relationship to Ancient Studies), or a similar degree programme
You must demonstrate the following knowledge, understanding and skills:
- Knowledge and understanding: knowledge and understanding of current research methods and theories within the field of Archaeology or Ancient Studies
- Knowledge and understanding: basic knowledge and understanding of the material culture and historical frameworks of Mediterranean or European Archaeology
- Skills: the ability to carry out a survey of (material) sources and secondary literature and to derive from this a ‘status quaestionis’
